Defining Accommodations at WVU

Accommodations are modifications or adjustments to the tasks or environment that enable students with Disabilities to have an equal opportunity to participate in academic programs at WVU.

The Office of Student Accommodations provides accommodation in the following areas:

  • Academic Accommodations – these accommodations are authorized to provide equal access to the classroom environment
  • Housing Accommodations – these accommodations are authorized to provide equal access to on-campus housing
  • Transportation Accommodations – these accommodations work in conjunction with the WVU Transportation and Parking Office to provide use of an accessible shuttle on WVU’s campuses

Temporary Accommodations

Temporary accommodations may be authorized for a limited period based on documentation submitted by the student. Students must submit updated documentation as necessary to adjust the term of their accommodations.

Temporary accommodations may be authorized when:

  • Students have a temporary injury or condition which results in a functional limitation. Students may be authorized for temporary accommodations if they have temporary injuries (e.g., broken limbs, hand injuries, concussions), are recovering from surgery, are dealing with short-term medical conditions that limit their functional ability to navigate campus and fully participate in class.

  • Students have insufficient or outdated documentation which suggests a possible functional limitation. All WVU students requesting accommodations must provide up-to-date, appropriate, and objective documentation that clearly substantiates a significant functional impairment. Temporary accommodations may be authorized to allow time for the student to get updated documentation necessary to ensure that the accommodations being considered are appropriate and reasonable.

To request temporary accommodations, students follow the same process for obtaining academic, housing, and/or transportation accommodations.

Confidentiality

All documentation submitted to OAS is kept separate from an academic record and is considered private under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
