Aira

Aira is an app that provides on-demand, remote visual interpreting for the blind and low vision community. West Virginia University is thrilled to announce we are now an Aira Access Partner! Anyone visiting or attending WVU can open the Aira app on their phone with the push of a button and connect free of charge with a professional visual interpreter. Aira's skilled visual interpreters will access the caller's phone camera and describe in detail the caller's surroundings, narrate, navigate, and read aloud to assist them. Aira is available 24/7/365, and no advance reservations are required. Get the Aira app for Google Play, iOS, or use the web app, and begin accessing on-demand visual interpreting today!

What is visual interpreting?

Visual interpreting is the collaborative process by which a trained, sighted individual describes visual information for a person who is blind or has low vision.

What tasks can visual interpreting assist with?

Visual interpreters are trained to assist with an enormous breadth of tasks! Any time you face a barrier because you are unable to access visual information on campus or in class, they can help. Popular tasks include navigating campus or public transit, getting descriptions at performances and other live events, and reading printed materials. Because WVU is an Aira Access Partner, the visual interpreters will have a map of our campus, and can quickly assist with navigation at no cost to you.
